Snowscape

I played in the snow!

This is actually in Leduc beside Stageworks Academy of the Performing Arts. I think the winter scene is beautiful!

Transitions

I decided to make this week’s video using the transitions from the footage of my previous videos. It’s something that I’ve been planning to do for a while now, and today it felt right.

I feel like I’m in a transitional phase of my life: I’ve just had a birthday, I’m newly out of university, and I’m trying to figure out where I’m headed in life.

And, most importantly, I’m searching for how dance fits into it all.

This video is an interesting look at the things that go on “behind the scenes” but still in front of the camera. All of the non-performance movements are captured.

It has identified some of the patterns that I have when I’m not performing. How I carry myself in the off-moments looks very different to me than how I carry myself when I’m consciously creating movement in front of the camera.

Without getting too existential or angst-ridden, I’ll just say that this video carries a different weight than the rest. It’s vulnerable for me. And the more I dance, the more I realize that vulnerability is so very important to explore.

Big Moves

It snowed in Edmonton!

Like, a lot.

So I stayed in the studio and made this movement study. Enjoy!

Monday Videos and Dance Reads!

I’ve sadly been overcome with a giant cold this week, and because it fell on the same week as Entrelacement’s fundraiser I decided that the energy that it would take to make a new vid would be better spent on healing and resting.

SO! I’ve prepared a lovely dance reader instead, full of videos and articles that I think are awesome and timely:

The December Projects, a show that some of my classmates from SFU are currently working on, will premier on December 1 at Woodward’s. This is a video of an excerpt of Katie DeVries’s piece, “Feast.” Pieces by Michael Kong and Erika Mitsuhashi will be shown as well. See it if you’re in Vancouver – these artists are known to make great work!

A piece in progress from Triadic Dance Works – they’re in Berlin right now and it looks like they are exploring some interesting new things.

This article about dancing William Forsythe. I love this quote:

As for the improvisation: Don’t worry about “right” or “wrong.” What’s important is that you move with confidence. “If you second guess yourself, it will read in the body,” Reeder says. “That’s when things start to look awkward.” Forsythe improv usually relates to material you do elsewhere in the ballet, which gives you a vocabulary to fall back on. If you’re stuck, try rearranging the steps of an earlier sequence, or dancing the pas de deux material without a partner. Be fearless.

My sister started a blog! No, it’s not specifically dance, but her ramblings are very entertaining and artistically relevant.

Two reviews of 605 Collective‘s “Inheritor Album” after it showed in Edmonton on October 5 & 6. Jen Mesch’s take. And Kelsie Acton’s of Sound & Noise (with video at the bottom!). I saw the show on both nights. All I have to say is, if you get the chance, GO.

The CBC’s article on the prevalence of modern dance in pop music videos. All of the videos for these songs are embedded in the article – and most are really interesting!

Projection and Performance Prototype: Banff Centre Boot Camp

This past weekend I took part in the Banff Centre’s Rapid Prototyping Projection and Performance Boot Camp, as a part of the IDEA Summit.

Two groups, each with three artists, were made and had 55 hours to create a projection and performance “prototype” – something that could be taken and applied to a live performance piece.

My fellow group members were Nicolas De Cosson (MFA student at University of Windsor) and Manuel Ermecheo (a student at Alberta College of Art & Design). We created a prototype using two projectors, two kinects, tons of video and sound footage, three mac computers, and an iPhone that sent live feed into one of the programs. (Am I forgetting anything?)

I have never been exposed to more technology options than I was on the weekend. However, after my mind had been thoroughly blown, I picked up the pieces and began to understand some of the behind-the-scenes programming that went on.

Although it really is only a beginning, I can see huge potential in the connection between dance and projection. I can’t wait to start to apply this knowledge to my choreographic practice!

Here’s the footage! It’s pretty rough but it definitely shows what we accomplished. The first two clips are of myself and the prototype, shot during our presentation to the Summit. The third is a closer look at Manuel playing afterwards!

Torso Expanded: Reappearing

This is an expansion on last week’s Torso Study. I had a ton of fun editing this video – so many possibilities!

One of my favourite things about this one is the neighborhood sounds. I filmed in my parents’ front yard.  Also, look for a car that pulls a U-turn right behind me!

Torso Study

Today’s video is a short one. Just a snippet of torso movement. Happy Thanksgiving!

Entrelacement: Kylie and Svea Duet

Here we are!

This video was filmed at St. John’s Institute on Whyte, and serves as a launch for my upcoming show, “Entrelacement.”

We had an open rehearsal for Alberta’s Culture Days on Saturday. This duet was created during that rehearsal based on solos that each dancer has already been working on.

The dancers are Kylie Kennedy and Svea Midbo. They helped me create the choreography!

For more info about the show, check out the Entrelacement page on the website.

We’re currently planning a Halloween fundraiser and solidifying the details for our show in December. If you’d like the first info about our events, email tatianacheladyn (at) gmail (dot) com and I’ll put you on our mailing list!
